Distant Sun
Inspired by Black Sabbath’s ‘Planet Caravan’
Distant Sun
I went traveling long ago
far away from home,
away from Earth and all I knew
to seek what might be true.
Down long electric strands
through starry webs and edifices
as I flew on unseen wings
the heavens revealed many things.
Strange skies full of sprites,
and precessing herds of distant suns,
worlds of burning, poisonous seas
and also things that should not be.
Ice mountains with bladed peaks
veined with unknown metals,
oceans of deadly auroras
and fountains that bend through stars.
Rings made of broken worlds
spinning round galactic horizons,
Moons sit like jewels in diadems upon the head,
Here! Hidden realms no one has tread.
Rains that devour stone,
towering mighty maelstroms,
glowing eyes of cosmic cloud
stars veiled in gray shroud.
Beyond the edge of eternity
are worlds trapped by dark stars
and shapes and colors no one can say -
fearsome things no words convey.
That is but a glimmer
of bleak and beautiful things.
How I long for golden sunshine
for home is on my mind,
But Earth is now a memory.
Its beauty gone to dust.
On Pluto I dwell with none
under light of a distant sun.
